Lowcountry Chapter of Professional Women in Building Formed

HHAHBA Office - Wednesday, August 12, 2020

The Lowcountry Chapter of the Professional Women in Building Council charter was ratified on June 16, 2020. The membership drive will kick off today July 6, 2020 in support of the area women in the construction industry.

On June 16th, fourteen women of the Lowcountry made history when the charter for the Lowcountry Chapter of the Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) was ratified. In an industry typically dominated by men, the PWB will be the voice of women in the building industry. It is dedicated to promoting industry professionalism and supporting members through education, professional development and networking opportunities. PWB of the Lowcountry will help members acquire and develop invaluable leadership and business management skills that boost career success. The council will also offer various recognition programs on a local and national level.

“We have a fantastic group of women in the Lowcountry who we were not really engaging with on a regular basis,” said Meg James of the Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association. “We needed to give women a platform to assist each other, a support group of like-minded individuals who can help each other succeed”

The Lowcountry chapter of PWB is the first association of its kind in South Carolina. According to recent studies released by the national chapter, company earnings of PWB members are 22% higher than those who are not members. PWB members agree that they are more successful business professionals because of the support they receive from peer members. They share strategies and business solutions through education, networking, publications, mentoring and legislative awareness.

The membership drive for the PWB will kick off today July 6, 2020. To find more information visit https://database.hhahba.com/groups/GroupRoster/women-s-council-7

Introducing Andrea Eldred, 2020-2022 PWB Chairperson

HHAHBA Office - Wednesday, August 12, 2020

Element Construction Partners

Andrea Eldred, Partner
Custom Residential and Commercial Contractor

Career / Years:
Growing up, the art of architecture and the theory of math always intrigued me. But, after two years of architecture classes in high school, the accounting won out. After completing my Accounting Degree, I worked for two different boutique companies which instilled the importance of client appreciation into my resume. Approximately ten years ago, I began building a start-up construction company owned by a family member. As the company grew, I continued to learn more about construction details while maintaining the boutique company culture. Very unexpectedly, in 2017, I was given the opportunity to partner with a coworker and create our own boutique construction company that we could mold into our vision – that of a small family atmosphere with each and every client, employee, and subcontractor.

Why PWB:
Since the inception of Element Construction, I have learned to push myself into facets of business ownership and management that were new to me. It quickly became evident how few women there are in our industry – not to mention women owners. I believe we face unique challenges, but they are well worth the effort. By working along with the other members of PWB, I hope to learn from those before me; support those next to me; and encourage those who are looking for opportunities to grow.

Favorite HBA Event:
Of course – the Oyster Roast! It is hands down one of the largest and most enjoyable annual events. However, I feel the need to mention the Annual Board Lunch. I was privileged to attend the December 2018 lunch and listen to the then current and past presidents speak to the group. It was then that I fully understood the passion and drive of the HBA.

Members of the Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association and the Community came together Wed, May 16 for the organization’s Annual presentation of its Education Foundation Scholarship Awards Banquet. For nearly thirty years, the Hilton Head Home Builders Education Foundation has been awarding scholarships to local graduating seniors. Eleven college-bound students from high schools within Beaufort and Jasper Counties, each received a $3,500 scholarship for their academic performance, demonstrated leadership, financial need, and commitment to community.

The Association’s charitable 501(c)(3) foundation, The Hilton Head Home Builders Education Foundation, raises scholarship funds each year through contributions made by Association members, as well as others within the community. The Foundation’s fundraising goals continue to increase each year in the hopes of awarding more scholarships to deserving students in Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton Counties. Great news! The South Carolina Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved the HBASC petition to intervene on a proposed tax multiplier for utilities with the aid in construction. The PSC also suspended their order to charge the tax multiplier until oral arguments can be heard.

NAHB members from throughout the United States attended a briefing with Vice President Mike Pence during time in Washington D.C. Members expressed concerns regarding softwood lumber and aluminum/steel tariffs but praised leadership for their role in tax reform.

The HBA Executive Committee met with SC State Legislature incumbent Jeff Bradley to present him with an endorsement from the Home Builders Association. As a friend of the building industry, we wish Representative Bradley the best in his reelection.

Finally, enjoy a safe Memorial Day weekend all while remembering the sacrifices made by those who served the United States of America with great courage. The HBA Office will be closed in recognition of Memorial Day on Monday, May 28 but will reopen at 9:00 am on Tuesday, May 29. If you have any immediate concerns, please contact Executive Officer Meg James via 843-304-6808.

300+ Attendees at the 48th Annual HBASC Bird Supper on Tuesday, April 18

HHA HBA members and staff met and took a photo with Governor Henry McMaster who received the Hammer and Trowel Award. The Hammer & Trowel Award is given annually to a public official (elected or appointed) or to any government employee who has had the greatest positive impact on the State’s housing industry during the previous twelve months. Selection is determined by an endorsement from a local home builder association and secret ballot from the HBASC executive committee.

Since 1970, HBASC members and South Carolina's legislators have attended the Bird Supper. The Bird Supper offers an opportunity to sit with elected officials to make sure they know how legislative decisions affect each local district’s building industry climate and ultimately each HBA member’s livelihood. Being able to join fellow HBA members from around the state and gather with legislators over a delicious dinner of fried quail, chicken, grits, green beans, biscuits, and other fine Southern cuisine is an experience like no other. Keep reading below for an April 2018 HBA Government Affairs update!

In addition the Bird Supper, the HHA HBA delegation also attended the HBASC Board Meeting where Executive Officer Meg James accepted the 2017 Builders Top Gun Trophy for the win by Cleland Site Prep at Hermitage Farm in Camden in November 2017.
